LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building
rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
LEED was created to define “green building” through
a common standard of measurement.
LEED provides a complete framework for assessing building performance
and meeting sustainability goals. Based on well-founded scientific
standards, LEED emphasizes state of the art strategies for sustainable
site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials
selection and indoor environmental quality. LEED recognizes
achievements and promotes expertise in green building through
a comprehensive system offering project certification, professional
accreditation, training and practical resources.
Just as Frog’s Leap strives to be the “Gold”
standard in sustainable farming and winemaking, we see LEED
certification as the “Gold” standard in the environmental
building industry. The goals of the USGBC and LEED fall well
within the company mission to “…strive to be pro-active
community citizens supporting worthy environmental and social
goals.”
In the Spring of 2005, Frog’s Leap Winery welcomed the
challenge to build its new Hospitality Center & Administrative
Office according to the LEED standards. These standards are
not only goals to strive for but provide the opportunity to
learn to be better stewards of the environment.

Our new Hospitality Center & Administrative Office
Frog’s Leap will accumulate points towards its LEED certification
in areas such as:
• Rapidly renewable materials
• Certified wood & composite wood
• Non-PVC piping
• Low-emitting materials: carpets, paints, coatings, sealants
• Use of renewable energy sources: solar voltaic and geo-thermal
• CFC reduction in HVAC equipment
• Double-glazed windows
• Thoughtful landscaping in relation to the sun
• Programs for storage & collection of recyclables
